Eye Gallery Offers Diagnosis & Treatment of Macular Degeneration
Your annual eye exam ensures that you are able to see clearly for your everyday activities. But another part of your eye exam tests for the early signs of eye disease that can rob you of your vision. The optometrists at Eye Gallery will do a comprehensive examination that includes viewing the interior structures of the eyes to detect the early signs of macular degeneration and other eye diseases.
What Is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration is an eye condition in which the part of the eyes called the “macula” begins to deteriorate. It is a progressive disease that can lead to blindness. In fact, macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness. There are two types of macular degeneration, the “dry” type and the “wet” type. About 90 percent of cases that occur are the “dry” type. A number of factors contribute to the development of macular degeneration, such as age, genetics, smoking and being Caucasian, which is a high-risk population group.
Symptoms of Macular Degeneration
In the early stages of macular degeneration, individuals may have no symptoms. But because it is a progressive eye disease, some vision loss may be noticeable in the intermediate stage. In the late stage, vision loss becomes quite noticeable and may interfere with everyday activities.
Macular Degeneration Treatment
There is no cure for macular degeneration, but a number of treatments are available to slow the progress of the disease. For “dry” macular degeneration, a combination of vitamins, including vitamin E, vitamin C, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc and copper can help to slow vision loss. The “wet” form requires more aggressive treatment, with special medications called anti-VEGF drugs and laser treatment to manage the changes in blood vessels of the eyes that occurs with the disease.
